When the advanced DVD player came out, I was not sure how to react. I thought it would blow over quickly and the VCR would remain king of playing movies. All my friends started to buy DVDs and receive them for Christmas and other occasions, but I never would request a DVD or DVD player. My family continued to purchase VHS tapes, and we played them in a VCR. Even when my dad got his first big screen, we made sure there was a VCR that could link to the TV.
Unfortunately, the DVD craze never ended like I had hoped and predicted. My father ended up purchasing a DVD player and starting his DVD collection! How could he do this to me? Although he gave in, my mom and I stayed strong until we had no other option. With the advances in television technology, VCRs became practically obsolete. VHS tapes were rare to find in stores, and it had become a reality: DVDs had taken over. There was nothing I could do about this, and if I wanted to watch movies, they had to be DVDs. At least when I am elderly, I can tell my grandchildren about how great the VCR was.

I'm sitting in front of a collection of twenty VHS tapes that my younger son Julien watches when the DVD player is being used by my older son. When Julien pops in a tape, I hear the soothing sound of the squeech squeech squeech as the teeth make their tireless cycle and the movie unfolds seemlessly from previews (which all kids love) to the opening of the movie. I do miss the simplicity of the VHS player.
I understand the frustration you went through converting all your existing movies to DVD, it was painful. But I really think the upgrade was worth it. The quality and superiority of DVD's was just too big of a change to go on without switching. If you have ever had the chance to watch a DVD in a home theater with surround sound and high definition picture, it is truly remarkable.
What is TRULY depressing, however is how long DVD's lasted as the highest media standard for video technology. They are now making everything on Blu-Ray as well as DVD. The difference between Blu-Ray and DVD is nearly equivalent to the difference between VHS and DVD. I feel like I am forced to change all my movies to Blu ray! We have come so far in technology since we were young that commercials no longer say "now on VHS and DVD", they now completely exclude VHS and say "now on DVD and Blu Ray"
